Webcam modeling is becoming increasingly popular, and many people are becoming more open to the idea of a career in webcam modeling. The webcam modeling industry is typically dominated by women, who make up the highest earners and the larger proportion of workers in the industry.

While most of the active members of the webcam modeling workforce are young women, there are several veterans in the industry as well. An example is Ainslee Divine (not her real name) who is a 46-year-old webcam model from Scottsdale, Arizona. In an interview with Business Insider, Divine said she earns above $1,000 a day from webcam modeling. She achieved this after only four years of webcam modeling.

Not every webcam model is guaranteed to hit such high earnings in so little time or at such an age. But, if you start with the right tools, you are guaranteed to achieve reasonable success.

One of such tools is a good personal computer. This is the workstation through which every webcam model earns her money. Because of the important role computers play in the career of every webcam model, it is important to take the time and effort to research the best computers that money can buy – especially if you are on a budget.

This article will provide every new and existing webcam model with all the information that they need to make an informed decision on what kinds of computers to invest in. We will ensure that we keep our information suited to the best laptops for webcam modeling under $800.

Desktop vs Laptop

Personal computers are broadly grouped into two main categories: desktops and laptops. If you are looking to get started as a webcam model, choosing what kind of computer you would use for your craft will be the first decision you have to make.

Desktop

A desktop, as the name implies, is a computer that requires being placed on a desk or a table for use. Desktops are often bulky compared with their portable counterparts, the laptops. Desktops take up quite some room, as you would need to set up a Central Processing Unit (CPU), a monitor, speakers, a keyboard, and, although optional, an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS). Just as the name implies, the purpose of the UPS is to prevent your desktop from going off in the event of a power failure or outage and thus losing all your data in the process.

Pros

  • Large display

Cons

  • Bulky
  • Not mobile
  • Prone to power failures
  • Requires too many peripheral hardware

Laptops

Laptops, on the other hand, are portable. Designed to be easy to carry around and to sit comfortably in your lap, laptops afford you the mobility and flexibility that desktops cannot afford you. With built-in speakers, built-in CPUs, and a battery pack to sustain power even in the absence of electricity, laptops are lean and less cumbersome to deal with than desktops.

Pros

  • Portable
  • Not susceptible to power failures
  • Compact and requires less space and hardware

Cons

  • Smaller display

We recommend getting a laptop over a desktop because of the flexibility and convenience that laptops offer. Desktops are stationary and can limit what you will be able to do on camera but laptops ensure comfort and freedom.

There may be a time when you need to move to other rooms while camming, or maybe even need to change your position in the room in order to get better lighting and better angles. You may even decide that you want to cam in the kitchen, or in the bathroom. With a laptop, the possibilities of camming anywhere of your choosing are almost limitless.

All these would be very difficult to do if you are using a desktop. A laptop is a better and wiser choice to make when you want to go into webcam modeling.

What are the Specs to Check When You are Buying a Laptop or Desktop?

As we mentioned earlier, you want to start on the best foot possible when buying a computer for webcam modeling. Webcam modeling is a career like any other and without the right tools at your disposal, you are not likely to reach your full potential. Here are some of the required laptop or desktop specs for a webcam modeling career.

Operating System (OS)

A computer’s operating system is the intermediary between the hardware and the software components of a computer system. It is what makes the hardware and software function together properly, and it is system software that manages computer hardware, software resources, and provides common services for computer programs There are two main operating systems that most laptop and desktop computers can run on. These two main operating systems are Microsoft’s Windows OS and Apple’s macOS. Microsoft came out with the Windows operating system in 1981 while MacOS was released by Apple in 2001.

Windows

The Windows operating system has gone through many versions over the decades. The first-ever installment of the Windows operating system was the Microsoft Disk Operating System (MS-DOS) which was released in 1981. After the MS-DOS, Microsoft released 6 other Windows versions between 1985 and 1998.

Between the year 2000 and now, Microsoft has released 8 versions of Windows. The latest installment of the Windows operating system is Windows 10. Windows 10 is also available in different versions including Windows 10 Home, Windows 10 Basic, and Windows 10 Pro.

If you decide to buy a computer that runs on the Windows operating system, we recommend only getting a laptop that runs on Windows 10. Any version of Windows 10 would work just fine for you, as long as it is not anything less than Windows 10. The reason for this is that Microsoft no longer provides support for its older Windows versions. Different operating system updates such as security updates, virus protection updates, new .NET frameworks, and so on will only be released on Windows 10. To make sure your system is up-to-date and properly protected, you are better off getting a Windows 10 computer, or upgrading whatever computer you get to Windows 10.

macOS

macOS is the best alternative to Windows. macOS comes in multiple versions that can be recognized and differentiated by the number they carry. The latest version of the macOS is the MacOS 10. Other versions are MacOS 10, MacOS 9, and so on. With the macOS numbering system, the larger number always represents a more recent version than the smaller number.

64-bit or 32-bit?

All operating systems come with a particular type of architecture which is usually a 64-bit architecture or a 32-bit architecture. An operating system’s architecture determines how well it runs with a computer’s architecture as well as what kinds of apps and programs it can run.

If you buy a computer system with 32-bit architecture, then you cannot run a 64-bit operating system on it. But if you buy a laptop with 64-bit architecture, you can run a 32-bit operating system on it.

Likewise, if you use a 32-bit operating system, you cannot run 64-bit apps and programs on it, but if you use a 64-bit operating system, you can run 32-bit apps and programs on it. This is called backward compatibility.

A 64-bit operating system can handle more data than a 32-bit operating system. Speaking in terms of numbers, a 64-bit operating system can address 264 memory addresses, which is actually about 18-Quintillion GB of RAM.

A 64-bit operating system is more recommended for webcam modeling because it handles multitasking and other heavy application execution better than 32-bit operating systems. This is because of the high performance that 64-but operating systems can execute as compared to a 32-bit operating system.

Central Processing Unit (CPU)

Also simply known as the “processor”, the CPU is the brain of the computer system. It is in charge of all processing operations including arithmetic and logic operations, and input/output functions. We shall discuss processors on two important metrics, which are: processor manufacturer and processor speed.

A good CPU is important because of the need to use remote toys and engage in multi camming. With a good CPU, you can connect multiple remote toys at the same time without any stress or reductions in speed. This will help you to increase your pleasure as well as increase the satisfaction of your customers.

Multi camming ensures that you can make more money by streaming on multiple sites at the same time. This will not be possible if you do not have a laptop with a powerful processor. A powerful processor will help you stream on many different camming websites at the same time without slowing down or crashing your computer.

Manufacturer

There are two main types of processors produced by the two major processor manufacturers in the world, which are Intel Corp. and Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (AMD).

Intel

Intel has dominated the processor manufacturing scene for many years. They were the undisputed champions of processor technology until recently when AMD came out with its Ryzen 7 series.

Intel has different models of processors, most notably its Celeron, Atom, Pentium, and Core processors. The best and most powerful Intel processors are the Core series. These come in multiple variations which are the Intel Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, and most recently, Core i9. Each of these Core processors also comes in different generations ranging from the first to the tenth generation.

As a webcam model, you should be aiming at acquiring a computer with a minimum of Core i3 (7th Generation). Other recommended Intel processors you can look out for are Core i5 (5th Generation and above), Core i7 (3rd Generation and above), and any generation of the Core i9 processor.

AMD

AMD is Intel’s biggest competitor, and in recent years, they have closed the gap between themselves and Intel significantly. AMD’s flagship processor models used to be the Radeon series, but now those have been replaced by the new Ryzen series models.

The most important and the most powerful and efficient AMD processors in the market right now are the AMD Ryzen 5, Ryzen 7, Ryzen 8, and Ryzen 9. These are your best available options to go for as a webcam model, and the minimum recommended spec for a webcam modeling laptop with an AMD processor is an AMD Ryzen 5 laptop.

Clock Speed

Computer processor speed is measured in a unit called Gigahertz (GHz). When it comes to computer processor speed, bigger is usually better. A 2.5GHz processor is better than a 2GHz processor, which is also better than a 1.8GHz processor, and so on.

A webcam model should ideally be looking at getting a computer system with a processor speed of a minimum of 2GHz.

Memory

A computer’s memory is also known as the Random Access Memory (RAM). computer’s RAM is its temporary storage unit. It is volatile and wipes clean whenever you turn off your computer system.

The function of a computer’s memory is to store all the temporary data in your computer system on a short-term basis. It also provides an avenue to access all these temporary data whenever they are needed. The more RAM space a computer system has, the more data it can store and access at the same time.

A computer’s RAM can range anywhere from 1GB to 64GB, also these two extremes are quite rare. Most computers today come with a memory range of 4GB to 16GB. As a webcam model, we recommend going with a laptop or desktop with 8GB of RAM. The least amount of memory that your computer system should have as a webcam model is 4GB of RAM.

Because you may need to run multiple websites at the same time, thus having to open many tabs in your browser, it is important that you have sufficient RAM space to store and access all this data at the same time. If your computer system does not have enough memory to store and access all this data at the same time, it may begin to run very slowly or even crash.

Besides the memory space your RAM has, the type of RAM you use is also important. There are 6 generations of RAM technology that you can choose from. These are Double Data Rate 1 to 6, i.e. DDR, DDR2, DDR3, DDR4, DDR5, and DDR6. DDR6 is the latest RAM technology and is the one we would recommend for optimum performance. However, DDR5 and DDR4 also offer good performance. DDR4 was released into the market in 2014, and we recommend a minimum of DDR4 RAM for webcam modeling.

A computer with 8GB DDR4 RAM would do just fine for a career in webcam modeling.

Number of Cores

Computers come with cores. A core is defined as a single processing unit. Most computers have multiple cores. The most common number of cores you will find in computers today range from quadcore (4 cores) to octa-core (8 cores).

The greater the number of cores a computer has, the better it is at multi-tasking and performing several different operations at the same time without lagging or crashing. A computer’s core count helps it perform at a greater frequency rate than its clock speed limit.

For a webcam model, we recommend getting a system with at least 6 cores, i.e. a hexacore system. While a quadcore system can also work just fine, it is much safer to go with a hexacore system. Ideally, you should be looking at an octa-core system for optimum performance.

Where and How to Check Specs?

It is important to know where and how to check your computer’s specs. You need to be able to find out all the important information about your computer to ensure that you are getting all the quality that you paid for.

Cnet.com has a very good search feature that can help you search out any laptop of your choice and get all the necessary information that you need. They have a large database of the best laptops across different ranges, along with their full specs.

But besides the online resources that can help you get the full specifications for your laptops, it is important that you know how to check your laptop’s specs by yourself. Whether you choose to buy an Apple macOS laptop or a Microsoft Windows 10 PC, here is how you can check your laptop’s specs in your Windows or macOS laptop.

Windows

macOS

To check your laptop’s full specifications on a macOS computer, follow the steps below:

  • Press and hold the Options key on your Apple laptop’s keyboard.
  • Select the Apple menu option.
  • Then click on System Information.

Things to Consider Other Than Above Specs

A computer is a very complex machine and as such, there are many aspects to a laptop aside from the specs listed above. While the specs we have listed above are the most important specs that you should consider when looking for the best laptops for webcam modeling, there are other relevant specs that you should look out for in a Windows or macOS computer.

Screen Size

Laptop screens all come in the same shape but in different sizes. At the lower end of the screen size range, you have laptops with screen sizes of 10.5 to 11 inches. On the higher end of the screen size range, you have laptops with screen sizes of 17.3 inches.
While we recommend small portable laptops within the 13-inch range for greater convenience. Such laptops are lighter and more mobile, making camming easier, more flexible, and much more convenient. However, the ideal screen size for webcam modeling is 15.6 inches as this is the optimum sweet spot between the tiny 11-inch screens and the enormous 17.3-inch screens.

We recommend going for a laptop with a screen within the range of 14 inches to 15.6 inches for the best webcam modeling experience.

Screen Resolution

Another very important determinant of your viewing experience as a webcam model is your screen resolution. This is what determines the clarity and crispness of your display. The most common laptop screen resolutions are 720p (High Definition, aka HD) and 1080p (Full High Definition, aka Full HD or FHD).

Even though laptops with 720p screen resolutions offer great high definition displays, they are slowly becoming outdated. Even YouTube has stopped labeling 720p videos as HD videos, and only label 1080p videos and above as HD. This shows that 720p resolution screens are falling out of favor and may soon become obsolete. It is better for you to go with a screen that has at least a 1080p screen for optimum display performance and clarity.

Battery Life

Even if you have all the best specs available on a laptop, they won’t help you too much if your laptop cannot last long on its own. Having a good laptop with great battery life is an important factor for success in your webcam modeling career.

Depending on the country or region where you are located in the world, you may have to deal with power failure issues once in a while. Should this ever happen, you need to be safe and rest assured that your source of livelihood would not be affected by the power failure.

When it comes to battery power, bigger is always better. The standard units used to measure battery life are milliamp-hours (mAh) and Watt-hours (Wh). The most common unit of measurement for laptop batteries in mAh because this is what tells you the capacity of the battery. To know the runtime of your laptop’s battery, you can divide the battery capacity in mAh by the amount of power that the laptop consumes (this usually depends on how powerful the specs are). This will help tell you how long your laptop battery can last on a full charge and on average use.

The minimum battery capacity recommended for a laptop for webcam modeling is 4,000 mAh. You can read this article for a better understanding of laptop batteries, how to identify a good laptop battery, and how laptop batteries work.

Microphone and Audio Quality

As a webcam model, you would also need to communicate with your clients during your camming sessions. Making sure that your laptop’s microphone and speakers are top is important in keeping your clients satisfied. Clients would not like being unable to communicate their wants with you effectively should the need arise.

Most laptops have microphones and speakers that would meet your needs as a webcam model just fine. There is usually no need to buy extra hardware for this. Some laptop manufacturers work with speaker manufacturers like Beats, Dolby, and Bangs & Olufsen to produce speakers to help bring extra sound quality to their laptops. We recommend buying laptops that have speakers made by any of the above manufacturers.

How Much Storage Does A Webcam Model Need?

Adequate storage is an important part of a webcam model’s tools. As a webcam model, you may need to store large video files of tutorials and other useful resources that you may need for your career. Storage also has a role to play in how quickly your computer boots up and how quickly you can open apps and programs. There are two main types of storage: Hard Disk Drive (HDD) and Solid State Drive (SSD).

Hard Disk Drive (HDD)

This is the most common type of storage commercially available. It is cheap, therefore it is available in large storage spaces up to terabytes, ranging from a few hundred gigabytes to terabytes.

For webcam modeling, we recommend getting a laptop with a minimum of 500GB HDD space to allow for enough space to store all your files, videos, and other necessary content that you might need for your job.

Pros

  • Larger storage space
  • Cheaper price

Cons

  • Slower speed
  • Low noise
  • Less efficient
  • Less rugged/durable

Solid State Drive (SSD)

This is also a common storage type, although it is not as commonly available as HDD. SSD storage is faster than HDD storage and is also more expensive. Because of this, it comes in fewer sizes than HDD and the most common storage type you can find in the SSD category is 256GB.

A 256GB SSD storage drive costs more than a 500GB HDD storage drive. Therefore, if you are going to get an SSD storage drive, you must be willing to spend more money or sacrifice some significant storage space in exchange for speed.

Some higher-end computers come with compartments for both HDD and SSD storage capacities. That is also another important option that you can consider when looking out for the best laptops for webcam modeling.

Pros

  • Faster speed
  • No noise
  • More efficient
  • More rugged/durable

Cons

  • Less storage space
  • More expensive price

We recommend that you get a laptop with an SSD hard drive. This is because, since an SSD hard drive is faster than an HDD hard drive, it helps your computer boot faster and load apps and programs quicker. This is important for instances where webcam models have to reboot their system as a result of unknown or unexpected errors.

HDDSSD
Price Lower priceHigher price
NoiseEmits low noises due to drive platters spinning and thread arm swinging back and forthNoiseless due to non-mechanical parts
HeatGenerates more heat due to friction between moving partsGenerates less heat because of the absence of moving parts
SpeedLoads and processes data and information more slowly. A system with HDD will take considerably more time to boot.Loads and processes data and information faster. A system with SSD storage will boot in less than 1 minute, usually within a few seconds.
DurabilityLess durable due to the presence of moving and spinning partsMore durable due to fewer moving parts
Electricity/Power NeededRequires more power to run due to moving mechanical parts, therefore draining your battery life a little bit faster.Requires less power to run due to no mechanical movement, therefore saves you some extra time on battery power.

Built-in or External Webcam?

When it comes to choosing what kind of webcam to use for your webcam modeling career, you have two choices. You can either go for a laptop with a built-in webcam and use that for all your webcam modeling needs, or you can spend some extra cash on an external webcam.

Not all laptops come with Webcams but you likely will never find a laptop with a price tag of around $800 that doesn’t come with a decent built-in webcam. However, we think it is better to buy an external webcam because these devices are designed specifically for the purpose of recording videos and doing video calls. Because they were made mainly for this purpose, external webcams tend to do a better job in helping webcam models work than built-in webcams. The better webcam gives you the better chance you would have good income.

Here are 3 of some of the best webcams that we recommend you buy if you decide to go for an external webcam.

Logitech c920

Logitech c920

The Logitech c920 is very popular among webcam models. It boasts the ability to shoot up to 1080p videos and has an amazing built-in microphone. The Logitech c920 HD webcam goes for around $90 on Amazon.

Logitech c930e

Logitech c930e

According to its manufacturers, the Logitech c930e is the best Logitech webcam out there in the market right now. Even though this webcam was primarily designed for business teleconferencing, we think it’s a good idea to purchase one for webcam modeling if you don’t mind parting with $130.

Logitech c922x

The c922x was developed with video game streamers in mind, but can also serve webcam models very well. It was made in collaboration with Xplit and can record 1080p video at 30 frames per second, and 720p video at 60 frames per second.

Logitech c922x

While we strongly recommend buying a laptop instead of a desktop for webcam modeling, the final decision is ultimately up to you. So, if you choose to buy a desktop instead of a laptop, you would have to buy an external webcam as well because desktop monitors don’t come with built-in webcams.

That being said, some of the most important things to look out for in a computer’s webcam are the megapixels, the camera resolution, and the audio recording quality.

Megapixels

You are probably very familiar with what camera megapixels are. If you have ever owned or used a smartphone, you must know that the camera quality is often measured in megapixels. For example, the iPhone 11 has 12-megapixel cameras, the Samsung Galaxy S10 has both 16 and 12-megapixel cameras, and so on.

One megapixel is equivalent to 1,000 pixels (hence the name, mega). Most laptop webcams have 2-megapixel cameras and if you decide to stick with your built-in laptop camera for your webcam modeling, make sure that you don’t get a laptop with a camera with fewer than 2 megapixels.

Camera Resolution

Just like screens have resolutions, so do cameras. You can’t view videos and images in HD if your camera cannot shoot in HD, right? Right. So it is important that whatever laptop you choose to use for your webcam modeling can shoot in HD in order to allow your clients to watch you in HD.

Laptops like the Dell XPS 15 and the HP Pavilion dv7t come equipped with webcams capable of shooting in HD. The Dell XPS 15, for example, is capable of shooting in 1600 by 1200-pixel resolution, and the HP Pavilion dv7t can shoot videos at up to 1280 by 800-pixel resolution.

The problem with many built-in webcams is that their videos are often grainy and not very clear. Also, picture qualities differ when you’re using your webcam for live streaming or broadcasting and when you’re using it in picture mode. Because webcam modeling is about broadcasting your content live, ensure that whatever laptop you get has a built-in webcam that can record clear videos even during a live broadcast.

Which Brands Offer the Best Benefits for Webcam Models?

While all laptop manufacturers produce laptops that can be appropriate for webcam modeling, a few brands stand out as the ones that offer the best overall value. Brands like Dell, HP, Apple, Acer, Asus, and Lenovo produce very good laptops that are guaranteed to meet all of a webcam model’s needs, and at the right price too.

Most Dell Latitude, Dell XPS, and Dell Inspiron laptops contain specs that favor webcam modeling. HP Pavilion laptops also offer similar value for webcam models. Apple laptops are usually expensive, especially the Apple MacBook Pro, so we recommend that you go for an older model Apple MacBook Air.

All of these laptop manufacturers also have customer support services that can offer technical assistance who webcam models that face difficulties while using their laptops. Webcam models can use all these to their benefit to avoid running into issues while camming.

So Which Laptop Should I Go For?
