It goes without saying that not everyone I meet knows that I work as a cam girl. I mean, while we live in an increasingly open world, where sexuality is comfortably discussed and women can be confident with their bodies, it’s still not the kind of conversation I’d want to have with my mum and dad. That being said, my boyfriend absolutely loves what I do – I think it really turns him on knowing that I’m being admired by loads of different men – and after every cam session, he’s always waiting to pounce on me and take me to the bedroom!
Anyway, I digress. The point I’m trying to make is that cam girls are usually a little secretive about what they do, and this means it can be really difficult to find out real, unadulterated, honest information if you’re looking to set up a webcam for yourself, and start making money this way. It certainly was for me; before I met my friend Sarah, who after a few drinks revealed to me her other life as an online seductress, I wouldn’t have had a clue about where to start in the world of camming. I certainly wouldn’t have known anything about working as a cam girl, or what it’s really like to be a cam girl, and to be honest, I wouldn’t be in the position I am today: plenty of disposable income, the kind of schedule my friends would kill to have, and the freedom to work when and where I want.
So, with all of this in mind, I thought I’d write a series of blogs about the reality of being a cam girl. I’ll be revealing all – good and bad – so read on, if you’re toying with the idea of entering the fun and crazy world of camming for yourself. Who knows? Maybe you’ll soon be experiencing the kind of freedom and good times which have become a key part of my life, too!
How it all began
As I mentioned, I got into camming via a friend. My old school friend, Sarah, was passing through town and wanted to meet for a drink. I remembered her as being shy, mousey, not one to start conversations easily, but when I met her five years after graduation, I couldn’t believe my eyes.
She’d transformed into this uber-confident vamp, full of sex appeal and self-assurance. I swear every man in the bar couldn’t peel his eyes off her!
She told me all about her life as a cam girl, and about how much cash she was bringing in by flirting with guys online, and showing them her body. At the time, I was stuck in a dead end job, and was eager to explore other avenues, so with Sarah’s help, I signed myself up to a popular cam site… and I haven’t looked back since.
Tips from the top
Now, I’ll be honest: I was lucky. I was lucky I had a contact on the inside, and I was reasonably lucky (although it’s by no means rare) that I picked up some regular clients really quickly, and my popularity seemed to spread like wildfire. Not everyone is going to have the same experience, and I totally get that. So, if you’re trying to get started, here’s my advice:
Do your research.
There are LOADS of cam sites out there, and not all are made equally. Some are far, far better than others, and some really aren’t worth your time at all, partly because of lack of traffic, and partly due to the way they’re run. There’s quite a lot of information online about how to spot a reputable cam site, but I also believe in following your gut: if it looks bad, it probably is bad, and if it looks too good to be true, it probably is!
Invest in the equipment.
Nothing turns a client off like a poor quality image or crackly sound. It’s the 21st century, for goodness sake, so splash out on a high quality webcam or get yourself a decent laptop. It’ll pay for itself within a matter of hours, and is absolutely worth it!
What’s in a name?
You’re going to be competing with potentially hundreds of other cam girls, so anything you can do to make you stand out from the crowd is going to work in your favour. Choosing a memorable, sexy profile name is the first thing you’ll need to think about, and getting some sexy snaps taken for your profile also won’t do any harm. Make your bio short, snappy and effective – take a look at other profiles which appear first in the searches if you need inspiration. Got a particular fetish or kink? Make sure you let your clients know in your profile… the chances are there are more than a handful of people out there who want to explore it with you!
Getting in the Mood
If I’m making it all sound so easy, I apologise. Of course, like with any job, there are ups and downs with camming, and most girls will tell you the same thing. The most common downers? Just not being in the mood, I guess is a big one. I’m a human being, and generally, I don’t feel sexy or horny every single day… however, I would say that once I’m settled down in front of my webcam, and chatting to the fun guys I meet online, it isn’t long before I’m in the mood and eager to start a show. Naturally, the fact I’m getting paid very well indeed to get my clothes off always helps!
Picking Up Popularity
The other difficulty a lot of girls face is just getting started, and getting enough exposure to turn camming into a regular job which pays the bills. It can really take a while to pick up those regular customers, get your face recognised on the site, and become the kind of cam girl that is going to attract the attention of hundreds – if not thousands – of punters. My advice for this? Perseverance. Every cam girl has to start somewhere, and at first, we’re all in the same boat together. However, if you can keep logging in every day, being friendly, flirty and fun, it won’t be long before you start getting the attention you need in order to make this into a real source of income.
Once the doldrums of the early days are over, it’s all plain sailing from there! People will start recommending your shows via word of mouth or on the many cam girl forums that exist out there, and so long as you keep the quality of your shows high, and continue to take care of your customers, your popularity will continue to grow and grow. While I don’t tell many people about my secret life as a cam girl, if anybody comes and asks me what it’s like to be a cam girl, I’m proud that I can honestly say: I love it!
